Heading north of Mesolongi, at a distance of approximately 36km is the town of Agrinio which is the industrial and productive center of the region, with the main industry being tobacco cultivation and processing.

Agrinio is the largest city and of Etoloacarnania prefecture of Greece, with about 100,000 inhabitants.

The city is situated in a great plain irrigated by the Acheloos River and the whole area is a rich agricultural production center. The city is proud to have a University and an Archaeological Museum, with exhibits consisting of finds from local excavations.
